Okay, so I’m not going to be fluent in 5 months. I don’t have that much spare time with everything else going on.
There’s a great website called Livemocha which teaches you foreign languages for free (as well as connecting you to native speakers and other learners around the globe). My goal is to complete the beginner courses in Japanese, Japanese 101 & Japanese 102.
I was initially torn between Japanese and Spanish. I love both languages. I like manga and anime so I definitely want to learn Japanese. Spanish is more useful in the job market, plus I would guess that it’s probably the second most spoken language in the U.S.
This post has been edited. It did say Greek. My original list stated Japanese, I changed it to Greek and now I’m changing it back.
I just tried to do Greek, but I need it to be developed a little more. I need more hints from speakers on how to sound things out in English letters, since the words sound slurred to me. Plus, the longer the courses are on the website, the more they’re improved and tweaked. I just checked Japanese, and I’m actually a little sad to say that the symbols (I don’t know what that form of Japanese is called) have been replaced with the form that uses English letters. I suppose that will make it easier to learn, but I still want to learn to read the symbols, too. One step at a time.
I’ve done a couple of these lessons before, plus I either own or know where to find T.V. shows in Japanese. That will definitely help.
